SAT Preparation
SATs (standard assessment tests) are tests that students in KS1 and KS2 have to take, the first set at the end of Year 2 and the second at the end of Year 6. Only English and maths are currently included in the test.
The aim of these assessments is to judge how well students have learned as individuals, as well as to see how schools are improving. It’s important to note that SATs cannot be failed.
However, while this may be true, it’s also important to bear in mind that SATs do have a role to play in the direction of your child’s education. For example, if they perform below expected levels, it could mean that some extra attention and/or help is required to ensure they keep up with their peers as they move through school.
In KS2, SAT results are sent to the student’s new secondary school, information that can be used to help with streaming of pupils based on ability/aptitude.
These tests are designed to assess your child’s level in line with the national average and can help schools understand how best to support them, guaranteeing progress and maintaining certain levels of performance.
KS1 SATs
SATs in KS1 officially assess maths and English abilities. The tests are formal, but they’re conducted in an informal manner – with some students unaware that they’re even taking a test at all!
The tests are marked internally by teachers and the idea is to gain an understanding of children’s understanding of concepts. There is no pass or fail to worry about, it’s simply about getting an idea of your child’s level and ability.
KS2 SATs
In May, children in Year 6 take the KS2 SATs, which are more formal than the KS1 tests, being held under exam conditions. The exams are also assessed and marked externally.
Tests are taken in grammar, punctuation, spelling, mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension and maths.
